What a hot week! Even though the sun was blazing down, we still managed to get a bit of learning done!
Science
Our science unit is all about the human body. We’ve looked at the roles of the teeth and how they are the start of the digestion system and then the role of saliva in the process. We then looked at the internal organs and where they all belonged in the body. Some of were surprised to see how big some of the organs were and where they all fitted in our bodies. The last lesson we did had us recreating the process of digestion. We had crackers and bananas in a plastic bag with some orange juice and water. The plastic bag represented the stomach, the water was saliva and the orange juice was stomach acid. We mushed up the bananas, crackers and liquids inside the bag to show how the stomach works. After that, we had to transfer the food from the stomach into the small intestines – we used tights to represent the intestines. Then came the gross part. One of us had to squeeze the mushed food through the tights, making sure that any excess liquid was caught in a bowl (representing the body). This took about 10 minutes. Once the liquid was squeezed out, we were left with a solid lump of waste. Then the next gross bit. We had to transfer the waste from the small intestines into the large intestines (cup) and then recreate the movement of going to the toilet! The waste lump had to be squeezed out of the cup through another cup which had a hole in it. This experiment was loads of fun even though a bit yucky and messy!
History and English
We are learning about the Romans in history and are putting all of our findings into our English unit. We are writing our version of Horrible Histories making sure that we include all of the features of a script – actors, stage directions, acts and scenes – as well as plenty of humour. So far we’ve written loads of jokes about the battle formations they were known for, how you have to be super strong, have the best weapons and never accept defeat. Over the next few lessons, we will be refining the script to make sure all are involved making props, learning lines and filming. We can’t wait to film and put all the clips together.
DT
We looked at how we could use tubing, balloons and gloves to make a simple pneumatic system. It was so much fun being able to play and investigate all the possible solutions to making a toy. Some of realised that we could use a piece of tubing and a balloon to make a lid lift off of a box and it gave us the idea of making a pop-up monster. Some of us used the tubing to make a plastic glove rise up out of a pot as if it were a waving hand. We really liked it when Mrs Shipton made her glove come out doing a thumbs up! Once we played with the resources, we started thinking about what we could make for our final product. A range of toys are currently being designed in the class, and we are looking forward to making them in the next few weeks.
