French at Minchinhampton

At Minchinhampton Primary Academy we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides exciting, enjoyable and challenging learning opportunities for our pupils. Learning a language helps pupils to develop valuable cognitive and communication skills including key skills of speaking and listening and extends their technical knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives children additional perspectives on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

At Minchinhampton, French is taught using the Rigolo scheme of work. This uses relevant and everyday topics to immerse the children in the language and provides the opportunity for them to practise their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

What our pupils say:

“One of my favourite parts of the French lessons is when we get to learn a new song as they are so catchy!”

“I really enjoyed learning about food in French. I can remember frites means chips, orange is orange (!) and bread is pain! We made a film about our school and practised saying our directions in French as we did it. We tried to not speak English at all.”

“You live a new life for every language you speak. If you only know one language, you only live once.” Czech proverb

“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.” – Chinese Proverb
