What is the Early Years Curriculum?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework defines the key stages of learning and development for children from birth to five years. This period is the most crucial for a child’s growth, with development occurring at an exceptional rate. The framework offers clear guidance to practitioners, outlining the essential steps to support and enhance the learning experiences of children in their care. The EYFS follows a dedicated curriculum, with a revised version introduced in September 2021, applicable to all settings across England.

The EYFS curriculum is organised into Prime and Specific areas of learning. The Prime areas are essential as they form the foundation for children’s success across all other areas of learning and in life. The Specific areas offer a wide range of experiences and opportunities for children to expand their knowledge and skills.

The PRIME AREAS of learning are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
  • Communication and Language (CL)
  • Physical Development (PD)

The SPECIFIC AREAS of learning are:

  • Literacy (L)
  • Mathematics (M)
  • Understanding the World (UW)
  • Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

These seven areas, along with the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning, guide the planning of engaging, meaningful activities that cater to the children’s individual needs and interests. Through play, exploration, physical activity, and creative thinking, both indoors and outdoors, children will develop and thrive in a supportive, stimulating environment.

Reception at Minchinhampton (Early Years Curriculum)

At Minchinhampton C of E Primay Academy, we recognise the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as a pivotal stage in fostering a lifelong passion for learning. Our EYFS curriculum is carefully crafted to stimulate and support the children’s inherent inquisitiveness and eagerness to explore. We design and prepare the learning environment to ensure that children feel secure, enabling them to engage in purposeful exploration, problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. This approach lays the foundation for them to become confident, independent learners, equipped with the skills necessary to thrive and fully participate in the world around them.
