We can’t believe we’ve made it to Term Five! Our year together has flown by and we’ve had lots of fun. We’ve been enjoying ourselves so much. A lot has happened in school, and it’s been a really nice and fun time.
English
In English, we have been reading Libba and the Guitar. Libba is a left-handed guitarist who can hear music everywhere she goes. She has a brother called Claude. We did a “role on the wall” activity about Libba and the guitar.
We listened to a song called Fright Train that she sang in her 80s or 90s. Claude leaves for a job, which makes Libba very sad and alone. He also leaves with his guitar. Libba used to secretly take it, but now she can’t play it anymore.
Reading
In Reading, we moved on from The Explorer a long time ago, and now we are reading Podkin One-Ear, book one! It has gotten really good. It starts with a little bunny called Podkin. Sadly, he loses an ear and most of his family has died, except for his siblings.
The story gets really mysterious. He finds a bodyguard who was friends with Podkin’s dad. We’ve got really far into the story, and it’s just as exciting as any other book. We always stop on a cliff-hanger, which makes everyone surprised and excited for the next chapter.
History
In History, we have been learning about maps, showing how the Roman Empire grew and shrank. We have been acting like detectives by using booklets with pictures of Roman artefacts. We had to write what they are and what they were used for.
I think it’s been really fun learning about the artefacts that were used by the Romans. I especially liked learning about the stick with a sponge on top, which was used for cleaning. I thought that was really interesting!
Science
In Science, we have been learning about food and the different food groups. We are also learning about how much sugar is in some foods. I was surprised that even some of the most healthy foods still contain some type of sugar.
We have been sticking paper food into the correct food groups. We also did an activity with a pie chart that showed different food groups, and we had to decide what food belongs in each section.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about angles, such as right angles, obtuse angles, and acute angles. Acute angles are smaller than a right angle, and obtuse angles are bigger than a right angle.
Year 3s have been learning about money and column addition using money. They have also been measuring and learning some decimals. We do lots of practising, including “Chuck It, Check It, Change It,” where we answer times table questions.
We also practise for the MTC, where you are given times tables and have to answer within six seconds.
Computing
One of the coolest lessons is Computing. We have been learning about Song Maker and digital music. You create beats by pressing the screen, and it makes sounds that can be high or low.
First, we had to make any song we liked, and we could share it, see other people like it, and comment on it. Then we made nature songs, such as bird sounds, streams, or someone cutting wood. It was really fun! There is also a button that lets you control the music with your voice.
PE
In PE, the sportiest lesson of all, we have been preparing for Sports Day. We’ve been practising long jump, throwing a heavy ball, and running. We are also learning about the six body movements:
Speed, Stamina, Strength, Coordination, Agility, and Balance.
With Mr Parker, we’ve been preparing for long jump, throwing, long distance running, and relay races. We race in groups of five or six.
PSHE
In PSHE, we started with Happy Minds and then moved on to helping others. We also talked about medicine that children cannot have, how much medicine is safe to take, and why medicine has labels on the back to explain this.
Art
In Art, we have been learning about Alma Thomas and her block art. She was one of the first Black artists to have her work shown in the White House, because the President thought her art was amazing.
Alma Thomas couldn’t go to school when she was young, but she loved nature and her surroundings. She was also fascinated by space. Many of her artworks show planets, rockets, or flowers made from straight lines. She became very famous, inspired many people, and even had her own school.
School Production
I am really happy that the production went so well. Everyone acted amazingly, and the lights worked perfectly. Everybody played their part, including the grown-ups, who clapped a lot because that was their job!
It’s sad that it’s finished, but it has brought back lots of memories. Everyone thought it was amazing, and we are very proud of ourselves.
School Trips
I am most excited about the school trips. We are going to see the Romans, visit London, and go camping on the field. My favourite is the camping trip! I can’t wait.
I’m also really excited about London because most of us haven’t been there before, and it’s a great place to visit. We are also looking forward to the Roman trip in Wales. Some of us have never had a sleepover before, so sleeping on the field with our friends will be amazing.
Thank you so much for reading this newsletter. I hope you liked it!
