Art
We finally made our protest posters inspired by Banksy. It has been quite a tough unit as we had to draw and make our own stencil out of card. Cutting the stencil out for some of us took a while as there were a few fiddly pieces to deal with. With our stencils ready, we began the process of making the final posters. We had to consider where to pit the stencil as well as the lettering stencils (thankfully Miss Tonner provided those for us!) to make sure everything fitted on. We were pleased with the final results and thought they would make good posters for a protest about plastic.
Science
We’ve been looking at solids, liquids and gases this term. In our first lesson, we started off with investigating solids who seemed to take on the properties of liquids and had to see whether that meant they were both. We discovered that even though biscuit crumbs poured out of a tub like a liquid would, they didn’t take the full shape of a container unless forced to do so therefore they were still a solid. The next lesson then looked at whether all liquids acted the same, so we decided to race them! We put a drop of each liquid on a ramp (set at the same height for all the liquids) and then timed each one to see how long it would take for them to reach the bottom of the ramp. Some of the liquids took a few seconds to reach the end of the ramp. We couldn’t believe that the brown sauce and the paint took much longer. The paint took 1hr 35mins to travel and the brown sauce took 2hr 50mins! Our most recent lesson focused on gases. We wanted to see if gases weighed anything, so we weighed a deflated balloon and compared it to an inflated balloon. We discovered that the inflated balloon weighed between 2-3g (depending on the size) while the deflated ballon weighed just under 1g. We had to try and flatten an empty plastic bottle with the lid still on and then do the same with an empty plastic bottle with the lid off. It was much easier when the lid off of the bottle because the gas inside the bottle could escape but of the lid was on, it couldn’t. The final investigation on gases was seeing how far a scent travelled and whether we could use our sense of smell to ‘hunt’ the source of the scent.
Sports Day
We all enjoyed Sports Day. For a lot of us, it started at 11:30 with the athletic finals. We had so many of the class participating in long distance running, throwing, high jump and long jump. Across the hour, we competed in the events we had qualified for. It was really exciting and a lot of fun to be involved in the competition. After we had lunch, we were then put into KS2 teams and played lots of different games against each other. Some of the favourite games included the scarecrow event where you dressed up a team member in funny clothes and accessories; frisbee Quidditch which was quite funny because the wind kept on blowing the frisbee back at us and hurdles (even though a few of us were a bit reluctant to do this event to start).
Maths
Y3s have been learning about measures. We looked at comparing cm and mm and how we could convert to make that much easier. We then looked at different masses and again had to convert between g and kg. Finally, we looked at capacity and had to say how much liquid filled each container and say whether it was ml or l.
Y4s have looked at co-ordinates and have used them to make different shapes by plotting points on a grid.  We also learnt about area and perimeter and used this to work with different shapes.
