Sapphire Class
History.
Last week the whole of Y3/4 went to Bristol Museum to see lots of different Egyptian artefacts. We started off by getting to handle replicas and some real artefacts like a shabti, sandal, 3000 year old necklace, Bastet statue and a plumb line. We had to discuss each artefact and use the clues to figure out where they had been discovered. We had 5 boxes of artefacts to sort and ‘return’ to the correct location. After that we had a quick lunch before we headed off to the Egyptian gallery. In the gallery there were so many different Egyptian treasures. We saw actual mummified cats! There were 100s of shabtis just like the ones in Tutankhamun’s tomb. There were lots of coffins made from wood that had been painted with hieroglyphs. We saw canopic jars and couldn’t believe how big they were. There were actual mummies too! We really enjoyed seeing these treasures up close. Before we went home, we were allowed to have a look at other rooms in the museum like the fossils section, gemstones, stuffed animals and dinosaurs. The trip was so much fun and we are really glad we got to go!
DT
We have been practising our chopping/cutting/dicing skills recently all in preparation for our cooking day next week. We had lots of different fruits and vegetables and were shown how each one needed to be prepared. We were asked to prep apples, peppers, cucumbers, carrots and strawberries. Some of us found the thin slicing tricky, but we were all okay with dicing and chopping. Our class has chosen Mexico as its focus country. The recipes we want to make are chicken fajitas, veggie fajitas, veggie chilli, veggie tacos, beef tacos and flour tortillas. We are really excited to be able to have a whole day of cooking next week and we can’t wait to eat our food!
Science
We have been looking at magnets. Recently, we worked to see if we could make a paperclip ‘float’ which was really cool. Then we looked at what materials were magnetic and investigated to see if all metals were magnetic. We were shocked to discover that they weren’t! This week we made our own compasses using a needle, a magnet, a piece of cork and a bowl of water. We had to magnetise the needle by stroking it with the magnet at least 20 times (most of the groups did more than 20). We then placed the needle onto the cork which was floating in a bowl of water. We let the needle settle after it spun around for a bit. When it settled, we used a real compass to see if our one was pointing in the direction of north. For most groups, it worked, but for some groups, they needed to have a few attempts before it did.
