Here are some examples of the science going on around the school during a recent blink test.
In Reception, children were investigating different materials; water, kinetic sand, ice, hydrogel balls, instant snow and chocolate. They explored how they could change the material using heat, cold and water.
During a materials immersion session in KS1, post it notes were used for children to generate their own ideas, questions and thinking. These post-its can then be added to the Science folder along with a collage of photos of the activity or a mind map of collated ideas.
Children were given the opportunity to discover things for themselves. For example, y3/4 had owl pellets to dissect and explore but they were not initially told what they were and what they contained. Children hypothesised what they thought the contents could be by making links between some of the bones they had examined previously. Active discussion and debate continued between groups of children as they tried to work out what they had found.
In Y5/6 children were given the challenge to make a pinhole camera with the minimum of instructions. All of the children were engaged and focused on the task with lots of discussion, cooperation and questioning. They were then given the opportunity to test their camera and then had to work out why it wasn’t working or explaining what was happening and given the chance to make changes.
Science stimulates and excites curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around us. Science at Minchinhampton allows children to explore their curiosity, there a chance to develop ideas about why things happen and how things work to enable them to make sense of the world in a fun, ailment practical and safe way.
In our evolving world,the ability t o think clearly and creatively and use information to solve problems are important life skills. We need problem solvers, decision makers and innovators and we need to prepare our children for their future, not for our past. Science is a perfect vehicle to develop these higher order thinking skills. Questioning is key to generate high-level thinking and discussion and allows children to have opportunities to adopt self-questioning strategies.
