The eels have been released!

This afternoon we took a lovely walk down through the fields to Well Hill Lake where we released our eels.  We had around 100 eels each to release into the lake. Some of them were big and fat and all of them were wriggly.  Some of us were very brave and held the eels in our hands as they were poured into the water.  Ceri (the eel lady) said that they can last for 15 years so if we all come back in 15 years time we may still see one or two of our eels in the lake.
A big thank you for all of the mums and dads that came to help and a special thank you to Ceri and the Severn and Wye Smokery for lending us the eels.

World Cup Final – Reception

The final between Wales and Scotland has now been played.

The match took place during lunch time and the referee was Kieran Forbes from Forest Green Rovers.  It was a nail biting match.  Both goalies played particularly well but in the end it was the right foot of Fergus that won the match for Scotland.

Final score

Scotland  2  –  1  Wales

It has been a truly amazing football tournament and we have all been every impressed with the talent and commitment of the players. Well done to everyone that took part.

Owl Pellets

As part of our owl topic we have learnt that owls like to eat mice, shrews, voles and small birds and that they swallow their food whole or in large chunks.  Some of their dinner cannot be digested so the bones, fur, teeth and feathers are stored in the gizzard and coughed up later as an owl pellet. Today some of us became science detectives and had the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet to investigate what the owl had eaten for its dinner. Very carefully, we used tweezers and pointed sticks to tease the pellet apart and looked closely at what we found with a magnifying glass.  We discovered lots of interesting items including a whole mouse skull with front teeth attached, many tiny rodent bones, some seeds, bark, fur and even quite a large metal hook??? We are not sure how the owl managed to swallow that! It was fascinating! The rest of us are having a go tomorrow.

Please help with our class story

Today, during shared writing, we wrote the beginning of an alternative story for the Three Little Pigs. First of all we had to decide which characters to use and we had lots of super ideas such as The three little rabbits and the big bad fox, the three little wolves and the big bad pig and the three little builders and the big bad giant. Eventually we decided on the three little knights and the big bad dragon and here is our shared write so far.

The Three Little Knights and the Big Bad Dragon

Once upon a time there were three little knights who lived in a dark, spooky castle. One starry night they were playing noughts and crosses when suddenly they heard stomping footsteps, rumbling roars and scraping claws. They silently tiptoed to the window and saw a dark red, scaly dragon with spikes sharper than a chainsaw and a slithery spotty tail staring back at them from behind a rambling rose bush.

What happens next? We would love to hear what you think could happen next in our story.
Will the dragon attack the knights?
Will a princess come and save them?
Will the knights come up with a cunning plan?

If you have any thoughts, please add them in the comments box. We eagerly await your ideas!

All about Bears

In class we have been finding out lots of information about different types of real bears. We found out that Grizzly Bears have curved claws, Polar Bears have 42 teeth, Black Bears climb trees, Koala Bears are not true bears and the Sun Bear is the smallest species of bear. We all painted our favourite bear and here they are.

Our first blog of the year!

Well we are already at the end of week 5 and the children have settled amazingly well.  They are able to find their way around the classroom and the school and new friendships are beginning to form.

We have had a busy start to the year. This term our topic is Me and My Bear and we have been learning to retell Goldilocks and the Three Bears using actions to help us to remember the important words.  We have also been investigating porridge and drawing Goldilocks, making sure that she has a body as well as hands at the end of her arms and feet at the bottom of her legs.

This week in letters and sounds we have been learning g, o, c and k so that makes 12 sounds that we have now learnt in total. Some of us are now able to blend the sounds together to read the words. Very exciting!

In maths this week we have been counting everything! One of us counted 103 people in our plastic people pot.  We have also been ordering numbers to 20 on our big number line and playing guess the missing number games.

Tomorrow we are going to perform our Goldilocks story to Midnight Class and our school Nursery so we hope we can remember it all! We will let you know how we get on!
