Visit from Mr and Mrs Mansell

Today we were very lucky to have a visit from Mr and Mrs Mansell who run a food bank.

First, we talked about our favourite food like pasta, macaroni cheese, spaghetti, stew.

Then we thought about what it would be like to feel really hungry.

Mr Mansell asked If anyone knew what a food bank was. Isabel replied “Like a bank but instead of money it has food.”

A food bank gives people food that cannot afford it.

We learnt about the kinds of food that the food bank give to needy people; food like breakfast cereal, milk, rice, beans, chickpeas, pasta sauce, noodles, teabags and biscuits and each food parcel contains enough food for three days.

The food bank also helps people to find out the reason  why they don’t have enough food and help them to learn to get more money.  It turns sad people into happy people.

We asked some interesting questions;

How much food do you have at the food bank? 50 tons 7 elephant loads of food every year

How do you give food? Five cafes around the district and a van that drives to the house if  people cannot get to the cafe.

How do you not run out of food? Charity so people donate

Where is the food bank? Brimscombe

Thank you very much Mr and Mrs Mansell for a very interesting talk.  Find out more by visiting https://strouddistrict.foodbank.org.uk/

It has inspired us to start our own collection of items so that we can make up our own food parcels to send to the food bank and help others too. Therefore we are asking for donations of tinned and packet food. All donations can be left in the box outside Mrs Saeed’s classroom. Thank you.

Visit from Mr Partridge

Mr Partridge works with wind turbines to make electricity.
We learnt how wind is made.

Wind is made by the sun. The sun shines down and as it shines on the land it heats up the air which squished the air already high up squishing the cold air above the sea and blowing the air on the land.

What things use the wind? Hot air balloon, kites, windmills, wind turbine makes electricity, sail boat, parachute, drying clothes on the washing line.
How do we use the wind to make electricity?

Wind turns the sails on the turbine which makes cogs move in the gearbox producing electricity into a generator which turns the motor. A long cable runs from the back of the turbine into homes etc.
Wind turbines are found in different places, on hills and out at sea and even in our back gardens. In the UK we have the most turbines at sea than anywhere else in the world mostly on the west coast of England.

We learnt about different ways to make electricity and which ones were clean or dirty.

Dirty Pollution – coal, gas, oil

Clean No pollution – solar panels using the sun, water in dams, tidal power, heat from hot springs driving the turbine.

In the UK only one quarter of our electricity is produced in clean methods (yellow arrow).
We then asked Mr Partridge some questions.

How many turbines make electricity? Austin – 10000

How do they put turbines in to the water? Isabel – a metal tower burrows right down into the sea bed

How many turbines are on the land by the water ? Sam

How do they make tidal dams ? Alfred

How do you put the blades on the tidal dam? Will
Thank you very much for coming to talk to us. We will learn more about making clean electricity without pollution in our classrooms.

Visits from our pets

This week we have been very lucky to have had a visit from Oscar’s dog, Peppa, on Monday and Darcey’s dog, Rupert, on Friday. We all asked lots of sensible questions and gave both dogs a little stroke. Thank you Mrs Minchin and Mrs Morgan (and Granny) for bringing them in to school.

Here are some of the questions we asked to find out more about Peppa;
What is the dog’s name?
What kind of dog is it?
Does it jump?
How high does it jump?
How old is she?
What does she feel like?
Can she stand on two feet?
What colour are her eyes?
