Toys in Space

Our story this term is Toys in Space by Mini Grey. We have been learning to retell a shortened version of the story which is coming along nicely. We have also enjoyed looking at the book in lots of detail and talking about our ideas, likes, dislikes and thoughts about different pages of the book. Stay tuned for some of our alien work that has been sparked off by the book…

Term 5 – Here, There and Everywhere!

Our topic for term 5 is Here, There and Everywhere, moving on to the World Cup in term 6. This term we will be looking at where we live, finding out more about England and will then go on to compare England with a different but not too dissimilar country namely Holland.  We will also been spending a little time in Space and traveling back in time, to take a look at toys in the past. Such a busy term!

Sports Relief

On Friday, as well as our super class assembly, it was Sports Relief day and we all took part in a sponsored run around the field. Mrs Saeed was amazed at how fast some of us ran, and every one of us ran all the way round without stopping. Well done everyone! We raised lots of money for Sports Relief. Thank you for all of your generous donations.

Roots, shoots and tasty fruits!

Aqua Class is bursting with fruits and vegetables this term as we become immersed into our growing topic and what better way to start us off than making and tasting slippery slurpy soup. We had a great time on Monday peeling, chopping and grating our vegetables. Mrs Saeed cooked the soup over lunch time and then we all had a cup full in the afternoon. Some of us weren’t too impressed but most of us thought it was splendidly delicious.

Here is the poem we created during the day

Wash them

Dry them

Aprons on

Let’s get cooking, it won’t take long

Carrots

Potatoes

Turnips white

Scrub them clean with all your might

Grate them

Peel them

Chop them up

Throw them in the big red pot

Stir it

Mix it

Heat it up

Bubbling steaming boiling hot

Simmering

Cooling

Ready to eat

Tasty soup – a special treat!

Letters and Sounds

We have been working so hard on our phonics this term and we have now learnt all 43 phonemes in class.

Here are the phase 3 sounds that we know. Children, can you tell your mums and dads how to say each sound? 1

We now need to practise, practise, practise so that we can remember all of the sounds and begin to use them in our reading and our writing.

As a little bit of homework for half term try to have a go at the online ‘Pick a Picture’ and ‘Buried Treasure’ games to practise applying the new sounds. Can you score 10 points?

Good luck sound detectives! Let me know how you get on by adding a comment at the  bottom right of this blog entry.

Thank you

Owl Pellets

As part of our owl topic we have learnt that owls like to eat mice, shrews, voles and small birds and that they swallow their food whole or in large chunks.  Some of their dinner cannot be digested so the bones, fur, teeth and feathers are stored in the gizzard and coughed up later as an owl pellet. Today some of us became science detectives and had the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet to investigate what the owl had eaten for its dinner. Very carefully, we used tweezers and pointed sticks to tease the pellet apart and looked closely at what we found with a magnifying glass.  We discovered lots of interesting items including a whole mouse skull with front teeth attached, many tiny rodent bones, some seeds, bark, fur and even quite a large metal hook??? We are not sure how the owl managed to swallow that! It was fascinating! The rest of us are having a go tomorrow.
