This week we have been innovating our class retell of the Little Red Hen by changing the Little Red Hen’s friends. In our original story there is a bull, a cat and a rat. Yesterday, to match our sound of the day ‘g’ we used a goat, a gorilla and a gazelle. Today we used an otter, an ostrich and an orangutan for ‘o’. Tomorrow our sound of the day will be ‘c’. I wonder which animals we will choose???

Outdoor Learning
Don’t forget it is Outdoor Learning tomorrow for our reception children. Please send your child in to school wearing navy, grey or black leggings or joggers. Looks like it is going to be a dry sunny morning!
Reading
We have been doing so well with letters and sounds. This week so far we have learnt the phonemes ‘i’ and ‘n’ and the exciting part is that we are beginning to sound out phonemes and blend them together to read words! This can take lots of practice. See if your child can read these words at home.

Here is our poem of the week – Apples, Apples
All Reception children have now been given a pink poem book. Our first poem is Apples, Apples. Please share the poem with your child at home. Can they remember it and sing/recite it back to you? Can they find the rhyming words? Songs and rhymes have a hugely positive impact on a child’s language and literacy development.  Research has shown that a child who knows four nursery rhymes by the time they’re four will naturally be a better reader at eight years old. Rhymes help us to learn to play with words. They tune our ears to all the sounds in the word. By hearing different sounds we learn how sounds combine and blend together to form a word, we can learn how to play with them, how to change them and we can learn to recognise what sounds can be paired with other sounds. Most importantly it is lots of fun!
Outdoor Learning
We had a fabulous sunny morning in the woods today. We climbed trees,
explored the undergrowth
and collected lots of natural materials.
The children were very well behaved and followed our three rules
1). No pick
2). No lick
3). Be careful with a stick
We got back to school just in time for play time and even brought a big bag of cooking apples back to school with us. What shall we do with all those apples? More photos will follow soon.

We also learnt the phoneme ‘p’ today, as well as playing on Woodhenge, bikes and trikes and outdoor PE. What a busy day! I’m sure all of the children will sleep well tonight!
Wednesday
Today we have learnt the letter ‘t’ so we can now read the words sat, at and as! We played tennis, some of us made torches with junk, tents using our new den frames and others even made a terrific tank with the big plastic blocks. We are very impressed with the cooperative and creative play we are seeing from the children, both indoors and outdoors.
Don’t forget OUTDOOR LEARNING tomorrow. Please send children in to school wearing navy, grey or black leggings or joggers with the usual yellow polo shirt and blue sweatshirt on top. They will stay in them for the whole day so do not need their school trousers/dresses/skirts. They will be wearing wellies. Thank you for those that have already sent wellies in to stay in school. We do have spares for those that do not have any.
Letters and Sounds day 2
Our sound of the day today was ‘a’. We cut out paper apples, sang apple songs and sorted out s and a words from our sound sack. How many animals can you think of that begin with a? We would love to hear your ideas.
Mrs Bugg and Mrs Saeed are both extremely pleased at how well the children are retelling our Little Red Hen story.
I wonder what is in store for tomorrow!
Busy Monday
Today we started Letters and Sounds and began with the letter S. We found lots of things with the s phoneme in and Ned decided that Mr Moss had two s sounds “one in the middle m-i-s-ter and one at the end m-o-s.” We painted snakes and searched for the letter s around the school.
We also began our story retell which is The Little Red Hen. We will be retelling this story each day using actions. This is part of our Talk for Writing commitment. To find out more please click the link below.
