Reception -Aqua Class and Midnight Class
Minchinhampton Academy
Most of us have been continuing to learn Phase 3 sounds this term. So far we have learnt;
sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, igh and oa.
We have been practising reading and writing these sounds in words and have sent home sound cards with additional words on the back to learn and practise at home. There are also many free games online to support learning in class. Why not try these..
Welcome back and happy new year! We have only been back for three days and already have packed in lots of learning. Our story this term is The Enormous Turnip so on Thursday we retold the story in the woods, chopped up turnips and carrots to make turnip soup. Mrs Bugg and Mrs Saeed took the vegetables home and made soup. We all tasted the soup on Friday. Some of us thought it was disgusting but most of us thought it was delicious!
What did you all think of the soup? What is your favourite soup? Please add your comments below to share in class.
Today we had a fantastic party day. We started off with the movie Despicable Me 2 in Aqua class on beanbags and cushions.
We all enjoyed the film and popcorn!
Next we had our normal lunch.
After that we had a disco in the hall with Nursery. (Sorry, we were having so much fun that I forgot to take any photos).
Finally we went back to Midnight class for a party tea.
It was an amazing day. Thank you for all the donations of food. We had plenty and will probably be having mini party teas for the rest of the week with the leftovers! A special thank you to Rosie Bruce for lending us her disco ball.
We have been learning the First Christmas story and this week we all got dressed up and acted out the story. We had Mary and Joseph, donkeys, sheep, shepherds, camels, wise men, angels and stars. We started in Nazareth (school foyer) and travelled to Bethlehem (Holy Trinity Church). We also sang some of our Christmas songs in preparation for the whole school Christmas service on Friday.
Santa’s workshop has arrived in Aqua Class and the children have been very busy making presents and Christmas cards, wrapping presents, writing letters to Santa, all whilst listening to some Christmassy tunes.
We have now completed all of the alphabet sounds a-z! We are now going back to where we started with ‘s’ and this time we are learning how to write the letters using our school cursive writing.
As a reminder, here is how we form our letters.
Check out this website for more help with cursive letter formation and other useful ideas.

On Friday we were really lucky to be treated to a maths show by the author and TV presenter Kjaratan Poskitt, who is best known for writing the Murderous Maths children’s series of books. He brought maths to life in hilarious and mind blowing ways and had us all in stitches.
Here Kjartan cut an ordinary sized Christmas card in such a way that he could fit 8 children and Mr Ricketts inside. How did he do that?
